The City University of Hong Kong is one of the nine universities funded by the University Grants Committee that have the authority to independently assess qualifications. It enjoys a high reputation in the fields of research and academia, and its proportion of top scientists ranks first in Hong Kong. The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, as one of the key departments of the City University of Hong Kong, has long been promoting cutting-edge research in the fields of architecture and civil engineering.
The first Asian recipient of the 2024 Carl Zeiss Humboldt Research Award, Academician LIEW Kim Meow, is one of the core research leaders of the college. His research focuses on computational mechanics and structural optimization, composite materials and intelligent materials, particularly in the areas of fire-resistant building materials and the recycling of retired wind turbine materials.

To further promote the relevant research, Professor LIEW Kim Meow's team used a variety of 3D printers, including the concrete mortar 3D printer from Beijing NELD (NELD-3D730-1200-1200) and desktop-type 3D printers. The concrete mortar 3D printer, with its high precision, large-scale printing capacity, and wide adaptability to various materials, has become one of the core devices for the team's research. This equipment can achieve high-precision continuous layering of materials, quickly and real-time obtain the status and position information of the printing axis, and through software control and precise synchronization with the position of the printing axis, ensure the precise control of the printing path. The team can conduct more in-depth research on the performance testing of materials and structural optimization, providing new solutions for intelligent construction and sustainable development.
We look forward to the LIEW Kim Meow team continuing to lead the technological innovation in the construction industry with innovative thinking, continuously unlocking new technical bottlenecks, and continuously achieving new breakthroughs, contributing to the transformation and upgrading of the construction 3D printing industry and its sustainable development!
